A Monster in the Castle

A Monster in the Castle

Last night

I saw a monster in the castle

Cast by flickering candles

And when I retreated to my room

I dared not sleep

As it scratched hungrily at walls

Muttering about undeserved eyes and ears

Come morning the damage was clear

Stone and mortar torn bare

The guts of animals strewn about

Leading to the doors of my chambers

A crude symbol drawn on the fine mahogany

Smeared with red and dark browns

A rabbit crucified in its center by various bones

But bear these sins I shall

And so I began cleaning

How silly would I be

To let such vandalism disrupt these fine halls

By noon the guests arrive to a clean castle

Once more dining in fine mid day salads

Once more watching dancers and musicians

The upper crust enjoying their slice of the pie

And the demon shall come once again tonight

To read out my sins

To leave his mark so I may not forget the count

Once more shall I shiver and pray

For wood and stone to fend off claws in dark

Perhaps it would be more peaceful if they didn’t

But I have sins to bear, and I see no mercy

Not in these castle walls

I suppose I’ll light the candles

So at least the demon doesn’t get lost
