Nightmare of a Hollow Man

I had a nightmare yesterday
It woke me with a fright
Of a poorly lit future
Of a man who wished to be a boy
Dragging his feet
Pushed forward by the unbearable weight of time
And in that vision
I see him in that same cubicle he’s been the last two decades
His childhood friends all moved on to new friends and families
His family all estranged
Moved on to better prospects
And as he sits staring at his computer
His eyes red from years of abuse
His fingers aching with early carpel tunnel
And his mind clouded by the dark grasp of death
Wrapped around a soul so close to being crushed all together
He stands up
And he screams
“I was promised more
I was promised dreams and destiny
Where did I go wrong
Where
Where
Answer me”
But the cubicles are silent
His coworkers could not care less
He is just the assistant of an assistant’s assistant
So he sits down into his plastic chair
And as he begins moving spreadsheets around again
He dreams
Of a past
Where he was a boy again
When did he die?
When will I die?
