If There Is A God

If there is a god,
The greatest kindness is distance.
The unclosing eye turned elsewhere.
The restraint
Of not touching the wound.
Perhaps that is why silence outlives prayer
Why every plea
Returns wearing our own voice
And if there is no god
Then the cruelty is simpler.
We are made to ache for witness
And are placed among mirrors instead.
No soul remains intact
After seeing itself reflected
