Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd annually. It was initiated by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson as a national "teach-in" against pollution in 1970, but has reached 1 billion people in 190+ countries. The main goal of today is to raise awareness for a number of environmental issues, including, but not limited to, climate change, deforestation, and pollution. We also use today to encourage both individuals and governments to take action to protect the planet.

Following a massive oil spill, Senator Nelson founded Earth Day, which led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an independent executive agency established in 1970 to protect human health and the environment. They set national standards for air quality, water quality, and hazardous waste management, as well as managing programs created to reduce environmental risk.

Use today to plant a tree, clean up a local park, educate others, recycle, reduce plastic usage, and join environmental demonstrations to ensure we can keep Mother Nature happy and healthy for years to come! In the long term, people can switch to renewable energy, eat sustainable food, use public transportation or carpool, and participate in local clean-up events like those listed below.
