Congrats to September's Female Athlete of the Month, Emily Zgonc! Zgonc is currently a senior here at Hamilton. She plays on the Girls Varsity Volleyball team as a Libero. Recently, she completed the amazing feat of 1,000 Digs! Zgonc and the team are competing in a big game against DSHA this Thursday!
Teammate Brooke Baldwin praises Emily stating, “She is an insanely hard worker who cares so much for the team.”
Congratulations to Zgonc! Read more to hear from her:
How long have you played volleyball and why do you play?
I have been playing volleyball for a little over 10 years now. I got into volleyball because my older sister needed someone to pepper with when she started playing. I still play because volleyball not only allows me to compete and push myself, but it allows me to do so alongside teammates that have become my best friends.
Who is your athlete role model and why?
My favorite athlete is Elena Scott because I don't really know why. I just think she is a really good libero and is very fun to watch!
What is your main goal this season?
We often talk about taking things one game at a time, so right now I’d say our main goal is winning conference. After that, however, we would like to make it to state and then after that—win state! As a senior class, we have also talked about making it a focus to take in every moment and enjoy our last year as a part of the incredible program that Hamilton Volleyball is.
What are your future plans involving Volleyball?
I am verbally committed to play at the University of Delaware! Go hens :)
Do you play any other sports and if so what?
Nope— volleyball keeps me plenty busy :)
I love to be outside, so I like to hike, bike, paddleboard, and tube. I also love to bake, hang out with friends, and shop.
What are your pre-game rituals?
For high school I have a few: I always eat the same Jimmy John’s sub on every game day, my hair goes up in a low slick-back bun, and I must do my special handshakes with Aubrey Hicks and both of my coaches during lineup checks.
Do you have any teammates, coaches, parents, or other people in your life that have helped as an athlete?
There are so many people who have helped me get to the point that I am at as an athlete. First and foremost, my parents have always been my biggest supporters. After ten years of club and school volleyball, they have dedicated so much time, energy and money into my volleyball career. My sister has also helped me get to the point that I am at by setting an example for what it means to persevere and believe in yourself. I have also been blessed with the best high school coaching staff that anyone could ask for: Doc and Schneider! And finally, I have had some incredible club coaches over the years at Milwaukee Sting who have also helped mold me into the player and person that I am today.
