College Essentials: What to Pack to College

Starting college is an exciting milestone, but packing for it can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re moving into a dorm, apartment, or commuting from home, having the right essentials can make all the difference in making your college experience comfortable and successful. Here’s a comprehensive (non college specific) guide of what to bring—perfect for both women and men. 

Bedding Essentials:

Your bed will be your haven, especially during all-nighters and lazy Sundays. Most dorms have twin XL beds, but make sure you do your research before investing in bedding. 

  • Twin XL sheets (2 sets)

  • Comforter or duvet

  • Pillows (1-2)

  • Pillowcases

  • Mattress protector

  • Mattress topper (MUST; memory foam recommended)

  • Blanket or throw

Toiletries/First Aid:

Shared bathrooms and unexpected illnesses are part of college life, so come prepared. 

  • Shower caddy (plastic, not mesh (mesh=mold))

  • Towels (2-3)

  • Washcloths or loofahs

  • Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Dental floss/mouthwash)

  • Retainer (if applicable)

  • Razor and shaving cream

  • Deodorant

  • Nail clippers, tweezers

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Personal hygiene products

  • Basic first aid kit (band-aids, antibiotic ointment, alcohol pads, etc.)

  • Pain relievers (Advil, Tylenol)

  • Cold medicine (Dayquil, Nyquil)

  • Allergy relief (Benadryl, Zyrtec, or Claritin)

  • Hydrocortisone Cream

  • Prescription medications

  • Thermometer

  • Hand sanitizer (for dorm and backpack)

  • Tissues (MUST)

Cleaning supplies:

Keeping your space clean helps with focus and avoids roommate conflicts. Here are some essentials to keep your room clean.

  • Disinfecting wipes (Clorox)

  • All-purpose cleaner

  • Paper towels

  • Laundry detergent and dryer sheets

  • Laundry basket or bag

  • Small vacuum or broom/dustpan

  • Air freshener or diffuser

  • Dish soap and sponge

Storage/Decoration:

Dorm rooms are small, so maximizing space is key. A little decor can also make it feel like home.

  • Under-bed storage bins

  • Hanging organizers for closet

  • Hangers

  • Command hook/strips/thumb tacks

  • Desk organizer (if your desk doesn’t come with one)

  • Full-length mirror (might be included with room)

  • Small rug

  • Posters, photos, string lights

  • Bulletin board or whiteboard

Kitchen Supplies:

Even if you’re on a meal plan, you’ll want a few basics for snacks or late-night cravings.

  • Reusable water bottles

  • Coffee maker/kettle (optional)

  • Microwaveable bowls and plates (1-2 sets)

  • Reusable utensils (1-2 sets)

  • Travel mug

  • Dish towel

  • Mini fridge (if not provided)

  • Microwave (if allowed)

  • Non-perishable snacks

Clothing Essentials:

Make sure to pack according to your college’s climate, but here are some solid essentials to pack, including everyday wear, different weather, and various occasions.

  • Everyday Basics

    • T-shirts and tank tops

    • Casual shirts/blouses

    • Jeans and casual pants

    • Leggings or sweatpants

    • Hoodies and sweatshirts

    • Shorts

  • Undergarments & Sleepwear

    • Underwear and bras

    • Socks (regular + athletic)

    • Pajamas or sleepwear

    • Slippers or comfy house shoes

  • Workout & Activewear

    • Athletic tops and bottoms

    • Sports bras (if applicable)

    • Gym shoes

  • Outerwear

    • Lightweight jacket

    • Raincoat or waterproof jacket

    • Winter coat (if you’re in a colder climate)

    • Gloves, hat, scarf (for winter)

  • Shoes

    • Everyday sneakers (you’ll be walking A LOT)

    • Sandals or flip-flops

    • Formal shoes (flats, dress shoes, etc.)

    • Boots (for rain or snow)

    • Shower shoes (MUST)

  • Formal/Special Occasion

    • Business casual outfit (for presentations or interviews)

    • Formal outfit (1-2)(for events or banquets)

    • Belt and accessories

  • Seasonal/Optional

    • Swimsuits

    • Sunglasses

    • Hats

    • Robe

School Supplies:

Don’t let a lack of materials get in the way of good grades. Make sure you come to school with some essentials, but also play it by ear when you attend your syllabus lecture.

  • Backpack or laptop bag

  • Notebooks 

  • Binders/folders

  • Pens, pencils, highlighters

  • Index cards

  • Sticky notes

  • Laptop or tablet

  • USB flash drive

  • Calculator (if required for your major)

  • Desk lamp (MUST)

Documents:

Having the right documents on hand is essential–not just for school, but also if you plan to travel or apply for a job. 

  • Social security card (copy)

  • Driver’s license or state ID

  • Student ID

  • Birth certificate (copy)

  • Resume

  • Health Insurance card (if you have one)

  • Passport

  • Emergency contact list

Random:

These are some items you don’t think about until you really need them

  • Umbrella

  • Reusable shopping bag/tote

  • Sewing kit

  • Safety pins

  • Lint roller

  • Fan (MUST)

  • Flashlight

  • Batteries

  • Scissors/Tape/Glue

  • Cards or board games 

  • Portable charger

  • Tray for bedside (optional)

  • Zip ties

  • Suitcase/luggage bag (for visiting home)

  • Extension cords

  • Bath/dish mat (for wet shoes/shower caddy)

Heading off to college is a major life transition, but being well-prepared can ease the stress and set you up for success. With the right essentials in tow, you’ll be ready to tackle classes, make new friends, and create a comfortable space that feels just like home.
