Congratulations to January’s Male Athlete of the Month, Cameron Schilling! Schilling is currently a senior here at Hamilton and swims for the Menomonee Falls Hamilton combined swim team. Schilling’s main events are the 200 Individual Medley (IM) and 100 Breaststroke, as well as team relays.
Fellow swimmer Brody Carlson, senior, speaks highly of Schilling stating: “I have watched Cameron improve drastically over the years, going from a JV swimmer to a state-level competitor. His commitment to his own improvement along with the team’s improvement is unmatched while his strong relationships with swimmers across all skill levels brings the team chemistry up and makes the sport more enjoyable inside the pool and out.”
Vihaan Kulkarni, another senior teammate, adds, “Cameron has improved a lot over the previous two years, ranking him well in the state. He has aspirations and a good chance to qualify for two individual events along with two relays at D1 State.”
Congrats to Schilling! Read more to hear from him:
How long have you been swimming, and why do you swim?
I have been swimming since I was nine years old. I swim to compete, but the main reason is the social aspect of it, as every time we have a practice or a meet, it is basically just like hanging out with my friends the whole time.
Who is your athlete role model and why?
I would say that my athlete role model is LeBron James Due to his on-court and off-court actions. The way that he faces adversity on the court is very inspiring, and the way that he uses his opportunity in basketball to help other people is as well.
What is your main goal this season?
My main goals for this season are to get the team record in the 2 Medley and Freestyle Relay, and qualify for state in either of my individual events, the 2 IM and the 100 Breaststroke.
What are your future plans involving swimming?
As of right now, I do not have any future plans regarding swimming after high school; I just want to finish out the season strong.
Do you play any other sports, and if so, what?
I do not play any other sports, as swimming takes up a large portion of my time.
Besides swimming, what are some of your other hobbies?
I don’t really have much time because of swimming. But my main hobbies consist of hanging out with my friends and family. Especially during the summer I like spending time with my family and friends out on the lake.
What are your pre-meet rituals?
A big thing for me right before my meetings is always my nutrition. I try to eat a lot of carbs the night before meets, and that is mostly some type of pasta. But besides that, I mainly just try to listen to music and get into a good headspace.
Do you have any teammates, coaches, parents, or other people in your life who have helped you as an athlete?
My parents are definitely the people who have helped me the most in my athletics, as before I was able to drive, they were the people who made sure I got to practice every day on time, and even when I do badly, they are still there to tell me good job. Along with that, I think my teammates are also some of the people who have made the biggest impact on my swimming career. Even when I am tired, they help me push past my limits and keep me going.
