Welcome back to the Musician of the Month series! This month we highlight Aaralyn Rowe! Aaralyn is a senior this year who plays clarinet in Hamilton’s Wind Symphony, bass clarinet in Synergy Combo, and is one of the drum majors for the Charger Marching Band!
Junior clarinet player Sophia Herbst praises Aaralyn by saying "she showed me that no matter how hard music is, she plays it, she manages to get it done, and she inspires me to keep going.”
Congratulations to Rowe! Read more about her below.
How long have you been in band and why do you continue to do it?
I’ve been in band for seven years now playing clarinet. I continue to do it because I really like the community and the group of people that I’m with.
What are some of your accomplishments you made this marching season as a drum major?
I think I’ve managed to accomplish a greater sense of community within the band…and just more confidence within myself to grow more personally.
What are your goals for yourself this year musically?
My goals for myself this year is to become more confident in my playing abilities and to help bring out [the abilities of] those around me so that we grow as a section and as a band. I really want to nail the solo parts and especially [grow] the clarinets as a group.
What are other activities that you are involved in outside of band and combo? What kinds of hobbies do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I’m also in Hamilton Drama, I do crew for that. For hobbies, I need to do stuff with my hands so I do little crafts. I make jewelry and love learning new card games from other people.
Who inspired you to become a clarinet player?
At my middle school, when the recruiters came and showed us the instruments, the one lady who specialized in clarinet was really nice and remembered me from multiple different districts since I changed schools. When I first started, the teacher that I got was very nice and motherly to me.
What music group is your favorite and one that you look up to?
My favorite band or role model is Emilee Petersmark from The Crane Wives. I really like her because she is one of the main singers of The Crane Wives Band. She does a lot of songs about how unfair the world is. She stands for feminism, LGBTQ rights, and is really a great person. I really like how she interacts with her people and what she stands for.
What are your post-graduation plans after high school?
My post-graduation plans are probably going to a four-year college. I don’t know where yet, but I do want to continue in music. If they have a marching band, I’d be doing that as well. If they have drama, I’d be very into that as well.
