Food coloring swirled, hidden messages revealed, and pennies shined at STEM Storytellers’ culinary-themed STEM event!
On June 23rd, STEM Storytellers hosted a STEM event and read-aloud at Pauline Haas Library. Children learned about Fannie Farmer, a cook who blended science with cooking, through the book “The Fabulous Fannie Farmer” and conducted experiments at three stations: cleaning pennies with ketchup, magic milk (food coloring swirls as it reacts with milk and dish soap), and writing hidden messages with a turmeric blend.
The event was an overall success, with lots of positive feedback received from children and parents. In fact, over 50 take-home popsicle stick harmonica STEM kits were distributed! This would not be possible without the help of Mathnasium and Kristine Gonzalez.
About STEM Storytellers
STEM Storytellers was founded by two high school students passionate about spreading STEM throughout local communities. This initiative was launched at Butler Library, where monthly STEM kits can be checked out. The STEM event was done on behalf of the students’ AP English Language and Composition service project.
