What is COYAD? (And Why You Should Care)

Making a difference doesn’t always require a big platform; sometimes all it takes is students caring enough to get involved. As young people, we are often viewed as the future of our communities, so why not use that power to support and provide awareness? A good community has students who are willing to support their peers, get involved, and spread awareness. COYAD does just that. The Council of Youth Against Drugs (COYAD) strives to spread awareness about health and safety in our communities.
What is COYAD?
COYAD is a school-based drug prevention program that educates young people about drug awareness while providing opportunities to develop leadership skills and make a direct impact on their communities. Here at Hamilton, we are working to expand our reach so we can connect with more students and make a difference in our community and beyond. Our goal is to promote drug awareness and encourage students to get involved, and you can help!
At Hamilton
Here at Hamilton, we meet once a month; in years past, it was typically after school, but this year we have switched to advisement meetings so we can be more available to students. Trust me, I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t want to just sit through a lecture about drugs. That’s boring.” Fortunately for you, that’s not what we do! We start our meetings off with some information about drug awareness since that is our main goal, with some additional information on being a leader so that we can improve our everyday leadership skills. After, we typically have an activity—or a couple—that help build the community of those in our club. That way no one is a stranger, and we can work together more effectively. (And yes, we do supply snacks at all of our events so you won’t be hungry while supporting!)
In addition to our monthly meetings, we have plenty of other events and opportunities to get involved. Last year, for example, we made cards for hospitalized children. We had a great turnout and created so many thoughtful designs that we were able to send a whole batch to the hospital!
We also hold fundraisers to support our club and, when possible, contribute to charitable causes. Speaking of fundraisers, if you love Chipotle and want an excuse to grab some, join us on November 17 from 5–9 p.m. at the Menomonee Falls location! When you mention COYAD, 25% of the sales will go toward supporting our club. It's an easy way to enjoy a meal while helping us continue our work in the community.
Interested in getting involved? Our next meeting is scheduled for November 11 during advisement in room 3. We typically meet on the second Wednesday of each month, and we'd love to welcome new faces!
Even if you're not sure whether you want to join, stop by and see what we're all about. It's a great opportunity to meet new people, build leadership skills, and support your community. We hope to see you there!
