Whether you know him from his hip-hop hit musical Hamilton or his lyrical masterpiece that is In the Heights, there is no doubt that you've heard his name. Born January 16, 1980 in New York, New York to Puerto American parents, Lin Manuel Miranda was raised in a household rich with culture, most notably, salsa and music alike. After seeing his first Broadway musical, Les Miserables, Miranda was inspired. He took a role in his high school's drama program, and from there, only became more and more involved. Acting was not his only call, being surrounded by hip-hop culture, Miranda consumed music like no other and even incorporated it into his works, eventually making his way to becoming a small-time rapper.

It was at Wesleyan College where his career truly began. Whilst studying drama, Miranda wrote the draft for his first musical In the Heights. In 2002, Miranda graduated from college and took on acting and performing with a hip-hop improv group. While the improv show Freestyle Love Supreme played on Broadway in 2019–20, Miranda continued to develop his own show, In the Heights. Blending hip-hop and salsa, and with Miranda in its lead role, In the Heights premiered in February of 2007. It hit the broadway stage in March of 2008, and quickly won four Tony Awards, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for drama, and won a Grammy. In 2021, the musical was adapted into a film, with Miranda playing a minor role.

Perhaps the most notable feat of Miranda’s was the release of his genre bending musical, Hamilton. Miranda saw the story of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father, and thought it was the very definition of what it means to be an American. With its revolutionary hip-hop and rap twist on American history, the musical was moved to Broadway in July of 2015. The following year, Hamilton was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The musical earned an astonishing 16 Grammy nominations, and ultimately won 11. In July of 2016, Miranda made his final appearance as the lead. It is no doubt that the musical left a great impact on his career, even earning him nominations such as best actor in a leading role in a musical. Miranda received an award for best book and best original score, and eventually, Hamilton was named best musical.

In recent years Miranda has been recognized for his Disney contributions, including his work on the movies Moana and Encanto with both soundtracks earning him Academy Award nominations. In 2021, Miranda released his first ever feature film which he directed, tick, tick…BOOM!

Miranda’s relentless work ethic coupled with his natural talent has given him world wide recognition and fame. He has become one of the most celebrated thespians in recent history, and from what it seems, has no plans of slowing down. So whether you like him or not, looking into his works might not be a bad idea, as he truly is a Shakespeare of our time.
