Aubrey Hicks, a senior at Hamilton, has recently committed to Marquette University to play volleyball. Aubrey has played for ten years, and signed as middle/rightside.

Hicks’ teammate Emily Zgonc says, “Aubrey is such a light! She pours her heart and soul into everything she does, and her performance and leadership this past season prove it. Over the course of Aubrey's volleyball career, she has been extremely dedicated. Especially evident in her impact on Hamilton Volleyball, I have witnessed Aubrey's unwavering dedication to bettering herself, her teammates, and the program as a whole. During tough moments in practices, lifts, and games, she always managed to uplift and encourage her teammates—even when she was just as strained as everyone else. Aubrey and I met each other through volleyball around 10 years ago, and our relationship quickly evolved from teammates to best friends. Our friendship is something I am beyond grateful for, and I think everyone needs an Aubrey Hicks in their life.”

What do you intend to major in?

I am intending to major in business.

What is your favorite pre-game song that gets you ready to play?

My favorite pre-game song is “Where Is My Husband!” by Raye.

What is your favorite memory from playing volleyball?

My favorite memory from playing volleyball was winning state my senior year against DSHA at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

What is one lesson you have learned from (insert your sport) that has helped you in life?

One big lesson I have learned from volleyball that has helped me in life is just the idea that not everything is going to be perfect. In volleyball, every single point that goes on the scoreboard comes from a mistake by someone on either team. Not every pass, not every set, not every hit, not every block—none of that is going to be perfect ever, and that’s why the sport is so beautiful. I’ve taken this into my everyday life, knowing that I need to learn to find peace with mistakes, and over these past 10 years, I have.

What drives you as an athlete?

What drives me as an athlete is the little girl who I once was. Never in a million years would I have thought back then that I would get to where I am today as a state champion and a future division one athlete.

What will you miss most about playing for Hamilton?

What I will miss the most, for sure, is my teammates. These past four years playing high school volleyball, and the years before that during Junior Chargers, I have created so many lifelong relationships, and learned so many lessons that I will take into my future.

What are you most excited about playing for (insert your college)?

I am most excited to represent what Marquette means on my jersey when I get to college. I have grown up a Marquette fan; I have grown up on the campus, I have grown up going to all the sporting events as both my parents attended college there, and my mom works at Marquette. Getting to follow in my parents’ footsteps is so special to me, and I hope I can experience the things that they have told me in stories. Also, the connections I have already built with the coaches and the girls at the university are so amazing and make me so excited for what is to come.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is trying to play (insert your sport) in college?

One piece of advice that I would give someone who’s trying to play volleyball in college would be to not give up. There have been so many times where volleyball felt like it was hurting me more than helping me, but in those moments you just need to make sure you think back to the little girl that you once were and play for her and for her love of the game. Everything will get better, and this sport is so rewarding in the end.

Is there anyone you would like to shout out for helping you in your athletic journey?

I would like to shout out both of my parents. They have helped me tremendously in my athletic journey. I would not be anywhere close to where I am today without their help. They have pushed me every single day, both as an athlete and as a person. They have given me every resource, every lesson, every smile, and every hug, and I never once looked in the stands and didn’t see them cheering for me on the court.
