September Teacher Feature: Mr. Soref

A graduate of UW-Madison and Condordia, September’s teacher feature is a new addition to Hamilton! Though it's his first year at Hamilton, Mr. Soref has been teaching for 24 years. His wife is a psychotherapist and the two of them have a daughter who loves Halloween. When Soref isn’t teaching, he enjoys traveling, reading, and photography.

What would students be surprised to know about you?

I’ve gone spelunking and once jumped down a waterfall inside a cave.

What song do you know all the lyrics to?

Ramble On, by Led Zeppelin.

Describe yourself in one sentence.

I am a laid back, inquisitive person who enjoys traveling and doesn’t mind occasionally getting lost.

What superpower would you like to have?

Flight.

What’s your claim to fame?

I met the Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, author of One Hundred Years of Solitude while in Cartagena, Colombia.

What would your perfect room/ classroom look like?

I’m pretty happy with my classroom, though I wish I had more books on my shelves!

What movie would you recommend to your students?

Mickey 17.

What is the best advice you have received?

Be flexible.

What Crayola Crayon color are you?

Denim.

Are there more wheels or more doors in the world?

Doors.

If you could go back in time to your childhood, what age would you pick to go back to and why?

Fourteen; to relive high school!

What do you wish you’d invented?

A reliable source of clean energy.

Favorite book?

David Copperfield.

What’s your best joke?

An Englishman, a Frenchman, a Spaniard and a German are all standing watching a street performer do some excellent juggling. The juggler notices that the four gentlemen have a very poor view, so he stands up on a large wooden box and calls out, "Can you all see me now?"

"Yes."

"Oui."

"Sí."

"Ja."

What’s the funniest or most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you as a teacher?

I accidentally played an “E” version of a music video.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would it be?

Enjoy high school and take advantage of every opportunity.

Is there anything you wish you would’ve known as a first year teacher?

Relationships are just as important as learning objectives. Have fun!

Who has most influenced you to become an educator, and how did they influence you?

My mom was my greatest influence. She was a teacher who inspired me to also become an educator.

Charles Dickens.
