Emily Zgonc, a senior at Hamilton, has recently committed to the University of Delaware to play volleyball. Zgonc has played volleyball for ten years, and signed as a libero.
Zgonc’s teammate, Aubrey Hicks, says,“Emily is the kind of teammate everyone dreams of having—steadfast, hardworking, and so, so kind. After playing volleyball with her for the past ten years, I’ve seen firsthand how she brings heart and determination to everything she does, whether it’s pushing herself through tough practices or lifting up those around her with encouragement and positivity. She leads by example, showing commitment not just to her own growth but to the success of the entire team. On and off the court, Emily radiates kindness, humility, and a genuine love for the game, and she has shaped our team into a family through her dedication and spirit. She is truly everything a volleyball player—and a best friend—should be.”

What do you intend to major in?
Right now it's finance, but that might change to biochemistry. So I guess I'm undecided. :)
What is your favorite pre-game song that gets you ready to play?
This depends on the day and the type of competition. If I need a good pump-up, it's “Hot” ft. Gunna. But, if I need to calm some nerves, “Hallelujah” by Pentatonix is always my go-to.
What is your favorite memory from playing volleyball?
Hands down, winning the 2025 State Championship with teammates that I love SO much.
What is one lesson you have learned from volleyball that has helped you in life?
Volleyball is a game of mistakes, so being the perfectionist that I am, I had to learn how to deal with that. Over the years, volleyball has taught me how to handle mistakes and imperfection not only in the game of volleyball, but also in school and life in general.
What drives you as an athlete?
I have high expectations for myself, both inside and outside of volleyball. I think this self-determination motivates me the most. I push myself hard to achieve my goals.
What will you miss most about playing for Hamilton?
Oh my goodness—all of it! Being able to compete at such a high level with teammates that became like my sisters was something incredibly special.
What are you most excited about playing for the University of Delaware?
I am excited to play for the University of Delaware because everyone on the coaching staff and all of the players are incredible humans. The school also values their athletes and provides them with many resources and opportunities, so I am super excited to experience all of that. Personally, I am also excited to take my career to the next level. I think it's cool to think about how much this opportunity may allow me to grow both as a player and as a person.
What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is trying to play volleyball in college?
1. Work hard and trust the process.
2. Always remember that your journey is your own, so try your best not to fall into the trap that comparison is.
3. Be patient. Your time will come.
Is there anyone you would like to shout out that has helped you in your athletic journey?
My parents have dedicated so much time, money, and energy into my volleyball career, and that is something that I am eternally grateful for. Allowing me to play club volleyball for so many years and supporting me every step of the way has played an integral role in shaping me into the player that I am today. Milwaukee Sting has been my home for my entire club career, so over the years, it has provided me with endless resources and opportunities that also helped me see recruiting success. Traci Buhr, specifically, gave me a ton of guidance when it came to my recruiting journey.
