Hasma Told Me You See Rainbows Now: THE CORRECT OPINION

Finn Walker and Elias Callen

As I, Finn Patrick Walker, an individual blessed with Oracle of Delphi-like opinions about music from birth, was scrolling through my Bandcamp feed, I decided that not enough people know, care, or want to know about my specific taste in music. I also decided it would be more fun with two people, so me and my bestest friend in the whole wide world, Elias Callen, greatest future “political science/undeclared” student of all time, are here to talk to you, personally, about our taste in music. We’re going to be back every month or so talking about some album that we like, and maybe you’ll find one you like too! You can probably email us requests. We will be honest with you though.

Two months ago, Southern California’s premiere mathcore-mathgrind-screamo-grindcore-emoviolence-sasscore-metal-released-on-vamonos-records-from-Masachusetts band Lorraine released their, as far as we can tell, first record. Hasma Told Me You See Rainbows Now is a fun, exploratory, experimental release that defies the expectations of its genres. Lorraine does their best throughout the runtime to throw the listener off with keyboards and electronic elements atypical to the genre. Though the record feels overwhelmed with influences at times, Hasma Told Me You See Rainbows Now never truly derails itself. Lorraine is individual in its theatrics.

Read on to hear what these two godless hypocritical NEETS have to say about it:

Elias

The texture of this entire album is very distinct; the way the songs change and take different forms throughout the entire time is very engaging. Overall, the entire album feels very distinct within its given genre(s); I think it is a welcome addition to my rotation of albums. If you’re interested in hardcore music or interested in expanding your horizons beyond more “normal” music, this might be a good place to start. In my opinion it’s a  7/10.

Finn

The production and arrangement of Hasma Told Me You See Rainbows Now is definitely unique. I’m not all too familiar with mathcore or mathgrind, but the variety of instruments and sounds in the record drew me in instantly. I personally find it most comparable to emoviolence and grindcore seminal records, with tinges of whatever else Lorraine decided to throw in there. The only major drawback of the record is one of the things that make it so good—the attitude expressed can get a little grating as the listener moves from track to track. Definitely listen to this, and if you’re into the second half’s vocal styles (and more toned down instrumentals), check out The Garden’s Kiss My Super Bowl Ring for a similar SoCal energy; that album is like a 4/10—I’m not its biggest fan, but I can draw some similarities.

Lorraine’s Hasma Told Me You See Rainbows Now is probably about a 6.5/10 in my book—well executed and interesting throughout with minor drawbacks.

Both of our favorite tracks :D

Elias and I have come to a unanimous decision that “Stab In The Front Not The Back” is the best track on the album. The interesting instrumentals and melodic background vocals are examples of the best, most unique work that Lorraine has to offer. It’s also one of the calmer tracks on the record, adding more variety to a tracklist that’s already sort of out there.

“It’s good.” –Angel Alexis Barron
